Hello All!!!
The 7GW Team is now safely back on British Soil. The trip was indescribably magnificent. We know that we haven't posted for a while, but unfortunately, a range of technical problems caused us to delay posting. There are going to be quite a few changes coming soon, but until then, Here are a few pictures of our time in Washington D.C. Hope you enjoy them.

The Capital Building

The picture of every news stand we visited.

The National Mall, less than 24 hours before an estimated 2 million people descended onto the grounds.

Capital Hill Subway Station on the Inauguration Day.
People filled the station from as far as the picture extends to at least 80 metres behind the position of the photographer, towards the exit.

There are more photos and video footage to follow

10 years on: The Lawrence Enquiry

In the lead-up to the 10 year anniversary of the publication of the Lawrence Inquiry Report into the murder of Stephen Lawrence, we have to ask ourselves if the context in which we all live now has changed for the better and if so, have things changed enough. Could Stephen's tragic death take place today, and if so, could - like in Stephen's case - there be no justice over 15 years on?

By sheer coincidence, 7 Go West (7GW) were on the same flight as Doreen Lawrence, Stephen's mother, who herself has inspired so many people with a message of hope. Another fortuitous coincidence is that Doreen is staying with her brother, who lives only 5 minutes away from the 7GW Headquarter; at Auntie Joyce's in Bowie.

Although Doreen herself would certainly not adhere to this claim, adorned with a modesty that anyone who meets her can testify to, (most recently Ted Carter- Executive Managing Director of Global Corporate Services at the Public Institution and Education Solutions) in many people's view, Doreen has been the single most influential black Briton in recent living memory.

By sheer perseverance, and the dogged determination that only those with an understanding of filial love can understand, Doreen has been the driving force behind the establishment of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust (SLCT). In the memory of Stephen, the SLCT provides social capital for young people who have none; If they have a dream to be an architect, or work in the discipline of the built environment, then the Trust can help.

As Doreen put it, at the opening in January of the Stephen Lawrence Centre:

"I hope the Centre will become a magnet for aspiring young people, who want to break the cycle of negative stereotyping, giving them the vision to shape theor won futures by setting themselves clear goals, gaining new skills, and staying positive."

Policies which were put in place instigated by the civil rights movement here in the US allowed Barack Hussein Obama, a mixed race child raised by a single mother, to access the most prestigious academic institions, not just be virtue of being a 'person of colour', but because he was smart and deserving of it. A level playing field, justice and equal access to services was sought by the dispossessed before, and he reaped the benefits of what the generations before him fought and died for, these emotions exemplified by the tears of the Reverand Jesse Jackson during Barack's acceptance speech.

It has been 10 years since a ground-breaking Inquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence, where the term 'institutionally racist' entered into our collective consciousness- a seminal movemnet in the history of British Race Relations. The SLCT is givng those young people who wish to pursue a career in architecture and the built environmnet who would normally not have the 'right' background and the know how to see those desires come into fruition and a chance to succeed. But what of the issues and recommendations highlighted in the Inquiry- have we been able to equal out the playing field, are we meeting out true justice that is colour blind and impartial?

Barack Obama gaining the presidency is really only the beginning of his journey; his mother and the mentors who made sacrifices and pushed for him to succed have served him well, and the real work for him begins now. Doreen and others who fought for the Inquiry, who kept the issues alive and in the public domain have served us well, and so OUR work also begins now. A decade after the inquiry, black people are 7 times more likely to be stopped and serached, the police force is still not representative of the communities that it serves, black and ethnic minorities are disproportionately represented at every stage of the criminal justice system, and young males are still under-achieving in the education system. Over the course of the next few months, various reports will be published, outlining how far we have come in relation to the recommendation and what will become clear is the vast amount of work yet to be done. The time has come for the gauntlet to be passed onto us to push for change.

WE IS THE NEW ME!

Reach For Our Stars

“…a young man of mixed race, without firm anchor in any particular community, without even a father’s steadying hand”

Obama’s journey [so far] is one which holds much affinity with many young Black Britons today and in order to become the first Black President, Barack Hussain Obama devised one of the most successful political strategies in world history and is epitomised by that global slogan – “Yes We Can!”

In so doing Obamamania’ offers each of the national REACH role models further proof of what can be achieved when we believe and work together. The REACH role models are an integral part of the emerging UK remedy to counter the challenges faced by young Black men in every sector of British society. Barack Obama has inspired a whole plethora of people- Black, White, Asian, Latino. The REACH role models have the unique opportunity to draw upon his ethos and the lessons of his campaign. Having launched a first cadre of dynamic, experienced and proven Black role models, we now stand on the cusp of transferring those rich experiences and key factors in human development into a meaningful and healthy alternative for a critical mass of young Black men fully capable of taking their own place in that hope we now all share, a belief that, together, YES WE CAN!

Obamamania’ resonates with young Black men. Obamamania offers undeniable evidence of what is possible and encourages the individual to offer their best. “He looks like me” said one young black man I recently met, “If he can do it, then so can I”.

Barack Hussain Obama’s journey instils a sense inspiration for further necessary changes in the future; and hope to a generation of young Black men in the wider Diaspora.

Not wanting to view this seminal historical event through the lens of the UK media from afar, 7GW have come to DC to see, feel and touch Obama-mania for ourselves. We are a group of like-minded individuals, whose mission – should we choose to accept it – is to boil down the essence of Obama-mania and bring it back with us to the UK. Our message will be under the banner of “Yes We Can – UK”

Watch this space for the opportunity to experience the inauguration and the buzz surrounding this historical event through the lens of fellow Britons……….

A Time for Change

As Obama mania takes hold, all eyes are turning towards Washington DC for what is perhaps the most eagerly anticipated presidential inauguration of all time. It is estimated that some 1.5 billion people will take part in this historic event through the various media channels of television, radio and the internet, and there can be little doubt that many of those working in offices will be somewhat distracted at their desks on Tuesday.

It is indeed a time for change at all levels, the problems in the global economy and political unrest in troubled regions present a whole host of opportunities for Barack Obama to implement policies for real change, that address these issues.

Believe it or not, the Presidential watch is also a subject of much debate and speculation, particularly when an inauguration is on the calendar. In the modern era US presidents have been very modest with their choice of time piece. The reasons for this are obvious, they want to connect with the people and sporting a Patek Philippe calibre doesn’t really send the right message.

Bill Clinton famously wore a Timex during his time in office. This $50 watch served him well and presented the right image to the public. However, Bill Clinton is in fact an avid watch devotee with a large collection of fine timepieces.

Perhaps the most famous presidential watch is the Rolex Day Date President, which earned its nickname after Rolex gifted one to Dwight Eisenhower. It was also reportedly favoured by several other Presidents including Roosevelt, Kennedy and Nixon.

So, what does all this mean for the 44th President of the United States ?

Barack Obama Watch

On the campaign trail Barack Obama was seen to be sporting a Tag Heuer, a watch that he has owned for some 15 years but more recently he has taken to wearing a Jorg Gray JGC6500 (pictured) which has the secret service logo on the dial. We can only assume that he will continue to wear this particular watch or perhaps switch to something similar but definitely not ostentatious. Obama’s election campaign and victory were all about connecting with the people and sending a clear message that his objectives are to bring back the true meaning to the name of the country he serves, the “United” States of America.

A New Day......

Tuesday
January 14,
2009

A day that will grip the world
A day that will forever be etched in history
A day that signifies a new beginning, a desperately needed change, and an end to the word 'impossible'.
A day that heralds the end of the George W. Bush Jr era.
A day that symbolises the beginning of hope.

The inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama as the 44th President of the USA is so highly anticipated that the world's media are fighting for available space at the inauguration event;
an event that not just attracts attention but demands it. The magnitude of the event can only be fathomed if you imagine surrounding the world's largest sporting events, (the Superbowl, the Olympics, the World Cup et al) combine them, and then some!!

Over 1.5 billion people are estimated to be intensely watching the event, keenly waiting for the 35 words that will swear in Obama as President and then the highly anticipated speech that will follow.

As we, the 7GW Team, journey to a place brimming with optimism, we invite you to take the ride with us. We plan on reviewing some of the wonderful events that precede and follow the Inauguration. 7GW aims not just to countdown with the rest of the world in celebrating a distinguished incumbent, but also to learn a few thing salong the way. These include understanding:

Key themes surrounding Obama's victory
How did he really do it?
What is so special about Obama?
Can the UK use the lessons of his rise to prominence as a catalyst for progressive change, particularly in terms of race relations, and also in attaining unprecedented heights and depths in our own quest for the ‘I'm-possible’?

YES WE CAN!!

Stay tuned.......
